BACKFLOW TECHNICIAN I

 

Pay Grade: 110                                                                                                             Dept: Utilities

Exempt: No                                                                                                                  Reports to: Environmental Compliance Coordinator

Hours: 40 per week                                                                                                      Date: July, 2018

 

SUMMARY: This is an experienced, technical position performed under general supervision to test, maintain, and repair backflow prevention assemblies for the protection of the potable water system. Incumbents should be certified in backflow prevention assembly testing, repair, and installation. The main focus of this position is to maintain proper operation of all city owned devices in accordance with established policies and procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Performs routine field and on-site inspections of backflow assemblies to insure conformance to standards; tests, diagnoses, troubleshoots, disassembles and cleans backflow assemblies; removes and replaces backflow assemblies as required.

  • Completes and files inspection reports and conducts follow-up inspections.

  • Accurately enters data into and retrieves data from computer systems or peripheral devices.

  • Frequently interacts directly with customers to explain requirements in regard to backflow and cross-connection compliance; while conducting field testing.

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes and City of DeLand policies; in regard to backflow assemblies.

  • Maintains inventory and assists with ordering replacement parts for backflow prevention assemblies.

  • Ability to perform piping repair with the use of tools and appropriate fittings.

  • Performs other duties or special projects as requested related to the area of responsibility.

     

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Candidate must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License. Candidate must possess certification in Backflow Assembly Testing and Backflow Assembly Repair.   Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma; supplemented by minimum two (2) years of responsible experience in performing the essential functions of this job description; or comparable water distribution or wastewater collection maintenance experience to include operation, testing, and maintenance of backflow assemblies.

     

     

     

     

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

     

  • Knowledge of residential, commercial, and industrial plumbing practices and codes.

  • Principles of hydraulics in pipes and potential causes of backflow.

  • Materials, methods, techniques, and terminology used in the implementation and enforcement of cross-connection control of potable water systems.

  • Operational characteristics of equipment and tools used in area of responsibility.

  • Basic mathematical principles and calculations.

  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers.

  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently to carry out assignments.

  • Ability to read and interpret data, information and documents.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Level III Distribution License desirable.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: This job requires walking, standing, bending, stooping, and driving. Employee may work in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions. Working in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment may be required as well as working from heights, with hands, feet and/or legs in water and may handle various solvents and chemicals.

     

     

    Lifting: 50 pounds or more

    Environment: Primarily Field work

    Vision: 20/20 or Corrected to 20/100

    Hearing: Normal Noise Levels for Office/ Outdoor Environments
