UTILITIES DISTRIBUTION SUPERINTENDENT

 

Pay Grade: O1O5                                                                                         Dept: Utilities

Exempt: Yes                                                                                                 Reports to: Utilities Dir.

Hours: 40 per week                                                                                       Date: August, 2017

 

SUMMARY: This position supervises and may work with a group of employees engaged in skilled, semiskilled and unskilled manual labor in the construction, repair and maintenance of public buildings, grounds and utilities. This position operates with a minimum of direction supervision and must exercise considerable judgment in solving problems.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Supervises and may perform construction of new City utilities.
  • Supervises the operation and maintenance of the water, sewer, and reclaim lines.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance when line breaks or blockages occur.
  • Orders supplies and equipment.
  • Responds to after hours emergencies.
  • Organizes the work of subordinates and is responsible for satisfactory completion of projects.
  • Responsible for safety of personnel and equipment.
  • Makes oral, written, and computer reports on operations.
  • Receives and acts upon complaints received from the public or other departments.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or GED is required. Extensive experience in work similar to public utilities, maintenance or the construction trades with some experience as a supervisor in such activities is required. A two year college education is desirable or any equivalent combination of experience and education in water and wastewater activities. A FDEP Level “II” Water Distribution License is required.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: The applicant must have the ability to develop and maintain good personal relationship with others, and communicate both orally and in writing. Basic computer skills required and reasonable speed in using them desired.

 

REASONING ABILITY: The applicant must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram forms. The applicant must also be able to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations when immediate guidance from the supervisor may not be available.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Ability to plan and organize the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety practices in the construction trades.
  • Ability to prepare budgets and monitor same.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective personal relationships with employees, other departments, civil groups and the general public.
  • Possess a valid Florida driver’s CDL class “B” license.
  • Ability to type using Microsoft word, excel, and e-mail.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may reach, climb, walk, stand, stoop, drive, balance or push to complete job task. The employee may work in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions. The employee may work in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment. The employee may also come in contact with heights, electrical energy, poor lighting, darkness, odors, and may be required to have legs, feet, or hands in water while on the job.
