FOREMAN II/ SPORTS AND TURF FIELDS

 

Pay Grade: 115                                                                   Dept: Parks and Recreation

Exempt: No                                                                        Reports to: Parks Superintendent

Hours: 40 per week                                                            Date: APRIL 2017

 

SUMMARY: This position provides daily operational management of allocated resources to ensure that all sports playing surfaces and surrounding areas are expertly conditioned to provide optimum performance, appearance and safety. Supervises and works with a small group of employees engaged in semiskilled or unskilled manual labor. Receives instructions and general supervision from a supervisor or higher level manager. Work is reviewed by reports and frequent site visits.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and implements plans for the successful maintenance of all athletic fields and grounds.

  • Plans, oversees, and project-manages major athletic grounds and fields renovation projects, as assigned; schedules, facilitates, oversees, and quality controls reconstruction activities.

  • Restores fields damaged by weather, use, or other conditions to a level commensurate with that expected of Division 1-A Athletic programs.

  • Assesses disease and insect problems in turf areas and performs pest and disease control operations.

  • Possess a valid Florida Commercial Driver License, Class B.

  • Certified with the State of Florida for use and combination of pesticides.

  • Mix or apply pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides through sprays, dusts, vapors, soil incorporation or chemical application on trees, shrubs, lawns, or botanical crops.

  • Applies pesticides and fertilizers.

  • Plans, assigns, supervises, and works with a crew engaged in such activities pertaining to turf and ground maintenance: mowing, painting, etc.

  • Operates backhoes, mowers, trucks, graders and other equipment that specialize in turf maintenance.

  • Designs irrigation systems to determine layout and locations of proposed sprinkler heads, pipe locations, and verifies design plans with topography to ensure consistency of blue-prints with actual requirements of the location.

  • Installs irrigation systems by assembling pipe, valves, timing devices, program controllers, and other related hardware to complete new sprinkler systems or modify existing systems.

  • Assigns personnel to work tasks and assists them with their job.

  • Responsible for monitoring and maintaining supplies and equipment.

  • Maintains yards, buildings, vehicles, streets and sidewalks, athletic fields, playgrounds, gates, and lighting.


    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED preferably supplemented by a considerable amount of experience in recreational parks turf maintenance and landscaping with at least 3 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements. Must possess a Florida pesticide applicator's license. (Or obtain within 180 days of date of hire)

     

    REASONING ABILITY: Employee must also be able to follow complex oral and written instructions.

     

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.

  • Ability to keep records and prepare simple reports.

  • Ability to use various hand and power tools related to the job in the operation of lawn care equipment.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, and fractions.

  • Ability to read safety manuals, work orders, operation guides, legal documents, instructions, letters, memos, journals, and maps.

  • Knowledge of sports field irrigation systems.

  • Knowledge of pest management guidelines and standards.

  • Knowledge of standards for intercollegiate athletic fields (Division 1-A quality).

  • Project management skills and the ability to resolve complex problems and issues.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: Employee may work inside an office environment, or outside in various weather conditions, with radiant energy, grease or oils, solvents, or chemicals. Employees may have to work in dusty conditions, poor lighting, noisy conditions, and darkness or on uneven surfaces. Some job tasks may require employee to bend, stoop, drive, kneel, and operate equipment, crawl, push and lift.

    Hearing: Normal to high noise levels
