Job Summary:

This position performs technical work in the enforcement of building codes. Work involves the inspection of all phases of building construction and alteration (structural, plumbing, electrical and mechanical) including sites and structures to ensure compliance with codes. The employee works under general direction of the Chief Building Official.

 

Job Description:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Inspects sites and buildings (industrial, commercial and residential) to ensure compliance with Building Codes.

  • Checks building plans for new work and alterations.

  • Confers with the Chief Building Official on questions, policies and inspection issues.

  • Confers with contractors, architects, engineers and others regarding construction codes and building plans.

  • Investigates inspection complaints.

  • Coordinates activities with other City departments and public and private agencies.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) accredited from the Department of Education is required.
  • Five (5) years experience as a building inspector, engineer, architect, or as a superintendent, foreman or competent mechanic in charge of construction is required.
  • Obtain certification from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation in the trade in which that inspector shall conduct inspections.

 

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.

  • It is the intent that building inspectors become cross trained and certified in each of the four major building construction trades. Provisional certificates acquired for any trade shall be converted to a standard certificate, as prescribed by law, as a condition of continued employment:

Entry Level: Meets the Florida State requirements to apply to the State for a provisional license immediately upon selection and obtain the standard license within one (1) year.

 

Level I: Possess valid Florida Standard Inspectors License in one (1) of the following areas:
Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical (FS 468)

  • AND obtain the Florida Standard One & Two Family Dwelling Inspectors License within two (2) years.

     

    Level II: Possess valid Florida Standard Inspectors License in one (1) of the following areas:
    Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical (FS 468)

  • AND possess valid Florida Standard One & Two Family Dwelling Inspectors License
     

    Level III: Possess valid Florida Standard Inspectors License in two (2) of the following areas:
    Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical (FS 468)

  • AND possess valid Florida Standard One & Two Family Dwelling Inspectors License

     

    Level IV:   Possess valid Florida Standard Inspectors License in three (3) of the following areas:
    Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical (FS 468)

  • AND possess valid Florida Standard One & Two Family Dwelling Inspectors License

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Good knowledge of structural engineering practices as applied to the construction and inspection of houses, apartments, and commercial and industrial buildings.
  • Ability to plan daily work schedule.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work on uneven or hard surfaces, in dusty conditions, in poor lighting, and in noisy conditions. The position may require an employee to bend, squat, reach, lift, turn or climb in either open or tight/confined spaces. The employee may work inside in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions, and may be required to operate motor vehicles or other equipment/machinery.
