SUMMARY: This position is responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility. Employees in this class report to the Wastewater Plant Superintendent and help supervise plant operators, trainees, and maintenance workers. Work is performed under the supervision of the Wastewater Plant Superintendent.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with the supervisory functions and performs the operations of the wastewater treatment plant facility.
  • Helps plan and organize the working schedule of subordinate personnel.
  • Diagnoses and corrects problems pertaining to the plant operations.
  • Performs and supervises the testing required by State and Federal agencies.
  • Maintains quality and quantity controls and keeps daily records and logs of operations.
  • Maintains and/or replaces equipment, pumps, motors, etc.
  • Responsible for responding to public inquiries, problems/complaints, investigations, and resolutions regarding the wastewater system.
  • Orders necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Submits reports to other agencies concerned with the plant operations.
  • Performs chemical analysis as necessary.
  • Monitors and operates computers for alarms and proper operation of the wastewater treatment plant.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Operations, services, and activities of a wastewater plant.

  • Supervise, organize, and review the daily work of assigned staff involved in wastewater plant operation, maintenance and repair.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for minimum requirements. The applicant must possess a “B” State of Florida certification as a wastewater plant operator. A considerable amount of experience in the operation of wastewater plant, preferably with supervisory experience is desired. Within one year must be CPR / AED qualified and after probation being available for on-call work is required.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Considerable knowledge of the techniques and practices in the operation of wastewater facilities.
  • Understanding of basic chemistry and bacteriology as applicable to such operations is necessary.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Requires finger dexterity, depth perception, and very heavy lifting and carrying.
  • Possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Advanced mathematical calculations and shop math (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions, algebra, calculus, and statistics)
  • Able to read safety manuals, operation guides, instructions, letters, memos, journals, maps, work orders, schematics, professional journals, legal documents, blue prints, and financial reports.

 

REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:

  • Valid Driver License

  • Class “B” Operators License issued by the FDEP

 

DESIRABLE LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:

  • Certified Class “A” Wastewater Plant Operator License issued by the FDEP

  • Two year College Degree is highly desirable

  • CPR and AED Certification

     

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: This job requires walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, equipment operation and driving. The employee will work outside in various weather conditions. Working in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment may be required as well as working from heights, in dusty condition, with hands, feet, and/or legs in water and may handle chemicals.

Hearing: Normal to very high noise levels
