Job Summary:
This is a skilled position within the City’s Street Division. Work involves the operation of medium and heavy construction equipment. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of specialized equipment. This position also requires the knowledge of concrete design and finishing and the application of hot and cold asphalt. Must have constant awareness of safety operations in order to prevent accidents. Assignments are outlined in detail by supervisors. Standard procedures should be followed and work is inspected periodically for safety and efficiency in operation. This class differs from Maintenance Worker classes because of the higher degree of skill required and the amount of time spent in operating the equipment. Supervision may be exercised over other employees.
Job Description:
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operates automotive equipment such as mowers, front end loaders, bulldozers, graders, dump trucks, tanker trucks, backhoes, street sweepers, bucket trucks, and excavators.
- Hauls equipment on trailers.
- Services equipment and operates medium or light automotive equipment.
- Works as a laborer when required.
- Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from a U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is required.
- An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of valid CDL class “B” motor vehicles operator's license issued by the State of Florida with an acceptable driving record is required.
- TTC Intermediate
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Significant experience in the operation of medium trucks and other various types of heavy automotive equipment with complex operating requirements is desired.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Ability to read and write neatly.
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and maintain good personal relationship with other employees and the public.
REASONING ABILITY
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to work independently with other employees and the general public.
- Understanding of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation.
- Ability to operate equipment skillfully, safely, and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of the hazards, applicable safety rules, and precautions in heavy equipment operation.
- Ability to detect needed repairs and to make necessary adjustments.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: Employee may work inside an office environment, or outside in various weather conditions, with radiant energy, grease or oils, solvents, or chemicals. Employees may have to work in dusty conditions, poor lighting, noisy conditions, and darkness or on uneven surfaces. Some job tasks may require employee to bend, stoop, drive, kneel, operate equipment, crawl, push or lift or carry 75 pounds or less.
