SENIOR ENGINEERING DESIGNER
Pay Grade: 123 Dept: Engineering
Exempt: No Reports to: City Engineer
Hours: 40 per week Date: February 2020
SUMMARY: This employee reviews and analyzes technical documents and designs under the direction of the City Engineer. Also prepares calculations, designs, reports, applications, technical memoranda and other documents related to land development and City capital improvement projects.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Designs utilities including water and reclaimed water mains, sanitary sewers, sanitary sewer lift stations and related utility structures per City and State Standards.
- Performs drainage design and prepare plans and calculations for submittal to Florida Department of Transportation, St. Johns River Water Management District and Volusia County.
- Assists the City Engineer in a variety of tasks such as design, bid preparation, research and permitting.
- Reviews and coordinates final plat approval with City Attorney, City Surveyor and Planning Department and records Final Plat with Volusia County Clerk of Court.
- Maintains records of work completed.
- Works independently with a minimum amount of supervision.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma is required supplemented by an AA degree or higher in Engineering Technology, Engineering Graphics with minimum five years of experience in drainage and utility design using AutoCAD. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: The employee must be able to follow complex oral and written instructions and to work with the City departments, constructors, and the general public. The employee must also be able to communicate both orally and in writing.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to follow oral and written instructions exactly and to prepare memos, reports, and work orders. The employee must be able to make mathematical computations, read and interpret plans, specifications, and legal documents relative to public works construction projects, is desirable.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Considerable knowledge of construction practices and methods, and of legal description of land.
- Ability to create boundary survey drawings and legal descriptions for in-house city projects, city leased property, city ingress, egress and utility easement, that may be required.
- Must possess good computer skills and demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and shop math (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, factions).
- Ability to read safety manuals, operation guides, instructions, memos, maps, blueprints, schematics, letters, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Knowledge of the City of Deland Utilities Ordinance, codes, laws and environmental standards in relation to regulatory compliance.
- Posses a valid Florida driver’s license.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: This job requires walking, standing, bending, stooping, driving, finger dexterity, and depth perception. The employee may work inside an office environment, or outside in various weather conditions, from heights, on uneven surfaces, or with radiant energy.
