FLEET MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT
 
 
Pay Grade: 112                                                                                   Dept: Public Works
Exempt:  No                                                                                        Reports to: PW Director
Hours: 40 per week                                                                             Date: August, 2022
 

SUMMARY:   This position oversees the maintenance activities and automatic equipment repair. The employee also does related work as required and is responsible for overseeing the managing garage repair. Supervision is exercised over skilled mechanics and foremen whose work is assigned and frequently inspected.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides a safe fleet of vehicles and equipment at a reasonable cost.
  • Directs employees in maintaining and repairing vehicles, construction equipment, and small engines to maintain the fleet on an up-to-date level.
  • Schedules work and orders supplies and equipment.
  • Receives and acts upon requests received from the department.
  • Evaluates the work of subordinate employees.
  • Responsible for safety of personnel and equipment.
  • Makes oral and written reports on operations.
  • Runs the fleet within all Federal, State, and City Guidelines and Licenses.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High school graduation or GED is required. Extensive experience in fleet maintenance of public works and other City Vehicles and equipment is required.  Must have maintenance fleet certifications.  The employee must have considerable experience as a supervisor.  A college education is desirable. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
 
REASONING ABILITY:  The employee must be able to follow complex oral and written instructions. The employee must also be able to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.
 
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to keep records, make reports and set standards for all shop procedures and reports.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety practices for both employees and equipment associated in fleet maintenance.
  • Ability to prepare and monitor budgets.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective personal relationships with employees, other departments, civic groups, and the general public.
  • Purchasing equipment; input to direction in deciding what equipment needs to be replaced and what needs to be added or depleted.
  • Understanding what people are doing in their departments and how the equipment is used to control costs and standardize fleet. 
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADAEmployee may work inside an office environment, or outside in various weather conditions, and may work in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment.
