Job Summary:

Performs a variety of skilled manual tasks which may approach the journeyman level but incumbents do not function at the journeyman level. Duties involve the use of trade tools and the operation of light construction equipment. This class is distinguished by the variety and complexity of the tasks and the minimal supervision received.

Job Description:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Builds and repairs signs, shelves, and tables.
  • Builds new roofs.
  • Builds forms and concrete repair.
  • Pours and finishes concrete.
  • Installs new plumbing fixtures and repairs old facilities.
  • Installs and maintains irrigation systems.
  • Builds and repairs fencing.
  • Cleans filters and performs minor repair work on air conditioners.
  • Installs window air conditioning units.
  • Paints a wide variety of surfaces.
  • Installs and repairs window frames.
  • Installs and repairs door locks.
  • Performs minor electrical repairs.
  • Builds playground equipment.
  • Repairs bleachers.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is required.
  • Some experience in public works and public utilities, or in construction trades is required.
  • Some experience as a Maintenance Worker III level is required.
  • Experience in and direct knowledge of Volusia County water ways is required.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements.

 

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.

 

 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with government officials, employees and the general public.
  • Ability to read and write neatly.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good personal relationship with other employees and the public.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out complex instructions furnished in written and oral form.
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety manuals, work orders, operation guides, legal documents, instructions, letters, memos, journals, and maps.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Understand and use proper safety procedures.
  • Ability to work independently in a diligent manner.
  • Knowledge of simple hand and power tools.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA The employee may work outside in various weather conditions, in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment, with radiant energy, grease or oils, solvents, or chemicals. Employees may have to work in dusty conditions, poor lighting, noisy conditions, and darkness or on uneven surfaces. Some job tasks may require employee to bend, stoop, drive, kneel, operate equipment, crawl, push or life or carry 45 pounds or more.
