ARBORIST TECH INSPECTOR I

Reports To: City Forester                                                                           Pay Grade 112 - $14.32/Hour

Position Type: Full-Time                                                                             Hours: 40 hrs/week

 

Job Summary:

This is a skilled position within the City’s tree division. Work involves personal participation in a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, conducting tree inspections on single family residential and commercial properties, investigating tree-related Code Enforcement cases, and developing SOPs and chemical monitoring and reduction plans for the City Nursery. The position is responsible for maintaining the trees in the City Nursery and documenting activities. Work may also include planting, pruning, felling, and removal of City trees. The position is responsible for supervising staff using pesticides in the City Nursery and may be required to apply pesticides on other City Properties. Assignments are received verbally or in the form of work orders, and the work is inspected during progress and reviewed upon completion.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducting tree inspections on single family residential and commercial properties.

  • Assisting with investigations of tree-related Code Enforcement cases.

  • Documenting work in City’s work management system.

  • Participating in the planting, pruning, felling, and removal of trees.

  • Using chainsaws, handsaws, pole pruners, and other tools to remove dead, broken, and undesired branches and trees.

  • Mowing, weeding, and maintaining trees in City Nursery.

  • Supervising staff using pesticides in the City Nursery and spraying pesticides on City property, as required.

  • Assisting with reviewing site plans.

  • Assisting Environmental Compliance Coordinator with tree barricade and silt fence inspections.

  • Preparing reports.

  • Washing and fueling vehicles and other assigned equipment.

  • Performing daily inspections and maintenance of equipment.

  • Relaying time and production information to the City Forester.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from a U.S. Department of Education accredited institution. BS degree in Forestry, Horticulture, Biology or a related field is preferred.

  • Ability to identify tree species and identify structural and health issues in trees.

  • Ability to read site plans and landscape plans.

  • Knowledge of the proper methods of pruning and removing trees or the ability to learn the skills needed to safely prune and remove trees.

  • Computer skills including MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint

  • Ability to input data into City’s work management system.

  • An equivalent combination of related education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements.

     

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possessing and maintaining certifications in Maintenance of Traffic (M.O.T) and Electrical Hazard Awareness Program (EHAP) are required.

  • Possessing and maintaining Limited Lawn and Ornamental Certification in addition to Ornamental and Turf Certification are required

  • Obtaining Arborist Certification from the International Society of Arboriculture is preferred.

  • Obtaining Florida Stormwater, Erosion, and Sedimentation Control Inspector Training and Certification are preferred

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to read and write neatly.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must know the safe operating procedures and maintenance requirements of chainsaws and other equipment used by tree workers.

  • Ability to recognize defects and possible hazards within trees.

  • Ability to adjust the work plan to maintain safety as situations arise on the jobsite.

  • Ability to use various hand and power tools related to the job.

  • Ability to work in a diligent manner.

  • Good physical condition is essential.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: Employee works outside in various weather conditions, from heights, on uneven surfaces, with radiant energy, in dusty conditions, and may handle solvents and chemicals. This position requires walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, driving, finger dexterity, depth perception, and lifting up to 75 lbs.
