Apprentice Electrician

Position Type:  Full-Time                                                                                        Hours:  40 hrs/week
 

Job Summary:
This position performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled manual tasks at the Apprentice level in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment, mechanical equipment, instrumentation and control equipment. Work is performed under the general direction of the Master Electrician, or the Journeyman electrician. Duties may involve the use of trade tools and the operation of light construction equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Master Electrician.

Job Description:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with the Journeyman Electrician to install electric wiring, devices, and perform preventive maintenance.
  • Performs routine inspections on operating equipment.
  • Responds to after hour emergencies as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

An individual who has not been through an Electrical Apprentice Program, or has not had time in the Electrical Field, must be willing to enroll in an Electrical Apprenticeship Program. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or abilities required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is required.
An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements except for licensure/certification requirements.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 
Possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
Must be First Aid and CPR/AED certified or get certified within six (6) months of hire.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND LICENSES: 
Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida CDL class “B” motor vehicles operator’s license or higher with Air Break and Tanker Endorsements and an acceptable driving record is preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, the City’s management team, and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form.
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety manuals, instructions, memos, work orders, and professional journals.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations when immediate guidance from the supervisor may not be available.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Possess the ability and strength to handle heave electrical materials and climbing stairs.
  • Ability to perform work in a consistently safe manner.
  • Capability of standard eye hand coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and shop math (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions, and algebraic formula’s).

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: 
This job requires walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, equipment operation and driving. The employee will work outside in various weather conditions. Working in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment may be required as well as working from heights, in dusty condition, with hands, feet, and/or legs in wastewater and may handle chemicals.
