Reports To: Master Electrician                            Pay Grade/Wage: 117

Position Type: Full-Time                                     Hours: 40 hrs/week

Job Summary:

This position performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled manual tasks at the journeyman level in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment, mechanical equipment, instrumentation and control equipment. Work is performed under general direction. Duties may involve the use of trades tools and the operation of light construction equipment as a part of the assignment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Master Electrician.

Job Description:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under supervision of a master electrician, performs such duties as maintenance and repair of equipment at airport, city facilities, generators, and storm pump stations.

  • Initiates and performs preventative maintenance programs.

  • Inspects complex electrical and control equipment for proper operation.

  • Repairs all electrical equipment and electronic components including lamp replacement.

  • Performs routine inspections on operating equipment.

  • Orders parts and materials as needed.

  • Coordinates with other trades as needed

  • Install electrical wiring, devices, and systems as assigned.

  • Responds to after hours emergencies as needed.

  • On call rotation is required for this position.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) from a U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is required.

  • Considerable experience in maintenance of medium voltage electrical systems, and equipment including experience in the repair and installation of: instrumentation including primary sensing devices, indicators, recorders, automated controls, radio telemetry equipment, small transformers, motor controls, 480 volt equipment, transfer switches, generators, control panels, general power and lighting is required.

  • Considerable knowledge of the most current national electric codes (NEC) is required.

  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements except for licensure/certification requirements.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
 

  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • Must be a licensed journeyman with Volusia County.
  • Must be First Aid and CPR/AED certified or get certified within six (6) months of hire.
  • After probation, must be available for on-call work rotation as required.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND LICENSES

  • Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida CDL class “B” motor vehicles operator's license or higher with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements and an acceptable driving record is preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, the City's management team, and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form.

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations when immediate guidance from the supervisor may not be available.

  • Ability to read and comprehend safety manuals, instructions, memos, blueprints, schematics, financial reports, work orders, and professional journals.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge and experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair, of all sizes of electrical equipment such as but not limited to, controls, telemetry, recorders, transformers, switches, and related equipment.

  • Knowledge of standard practices, tools, terminology, and safety standards of the electrical and mechanical trades.

  • Possess the physical ability and strength to handle heavy electrical materials and climbing stairs.

  • Ability to sketch and or draw: electrical installations and schematics / wiring diagrams.

  • Ability to compose a list of materials required to complete a job or project.

  • Ability to estimate the cost of materials and labor units required for a job or project.

  • Ability to perform work in a consistently safe manner.

  • Capability of standard eye hand coordination and manual dexterity.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and shop math (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions and algebraic formulas).

  • Ability to work independently and in a diligent manner.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: This job requires walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, equipment operation and driving. The employee will work outside in various weather conditions. Working in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment may be required as well as working from heights, in dusty condition, with hands, feet, and/or legs in wastewater and may handle chemicals.
