Exempt: No Reports to: Chief Bldg Official
SUMMARY: This position performs technical work in the enforcement of building codes. Work involves the inspection of all phases of building construction and alteration (structural, plumbing, electrical and mechanical) including sites and structures to insure compliance with codes. The employee works under general direction of the Chief Building Official.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years experience as a building inspector, engineer, architect, or as a superintendent, foreman or competent mechanic in charge of construction is required. A building inspector must be able to obtain certification from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation in the trade in which that inspector shall conduct inspections. It is the intent that building inspectors become cross trained and certified in each of the four major building construction trades. Provisional certificates acquired for any trade shall be converted to a standard certificate, as prescribed by law, as a condition of continued employment.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: The applicant must have the ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with other employees and general public. The employee must be able to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form. The applicant must have the ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work on uneven or hard surfaces, in dusty conditions, in poor lighting, and noisy conditions. The position may require an employee to bend, squat, reach, lift, turn or climb in either open or tight/confined spaces. The employee may work inside in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions, and may be required to operate motor vehicles or other equipment/machinery.

Environment: Inside or Outside of an Office Environment
Vision: 20/20 or Corrected to 20/100
Hearing: Normal to High Noise Levels

BUILDING INSPECTOR

SUMMARY: This position performs technical work in the enforcement of building codes. Work involves the inspection of all phases of building construction and alteration (structural, plumbing, electrical and mechanical) including sites and structures to insure compliance with codes. The employee works under general direction of the Chief Building Official.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Inspects sites and buildings (industrial, commercial and residential) to insure compliance with Building Codes.
- Checks building plans and issues permits for new work and alterations.
- Processes applications, and confers with the Chief Building official on questions and policies and other inspection problems.
- Confers with contractors, architects, engineers and others regarding construction codes and building plans.
- Investigates inspections complaints.
- May review and pass upon plans for building construction and alterations.
- Coordinates activities with other City departments and public and private agencies.

- Good knowledge of structural engineering practices as applied to the construction and inspection of houses, apartments, and commercial and industrial buildings.
- Ability to plan and supervise one’s own work and the work of others.
- Ability to drive a car.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s license issued by the State of Florida.
