SIGN MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN
 
 
Pay Grade: 12                                                                                      Dept: Public Works
Exempt:  No                                                                                        Reports to: Superintendent
Hours: 40 per week                                                                             

SUMMARY:   This position performs skilled work in fabrication and erection of traffic signs, and in painting of lines and markings for the control and regulations of traffic. Work is performed under general supervision of a superintendent.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
 
  • Possess a C.D.L. Class B.
  • Erects regulatory, warning and guiding traffic signs and sign posts.
  • Repair damaged signs and straightens bent posts.
  • Removes and refurbishes non-legible signs and markings.
  • Assists in the painting of lane lines and special zone markings.
  • Paints parking meter posts.
  • Applies cat-eye lane and line reflectors.
  • Applies prefabricated lettering to plastic facing.
  • Checks out materials from storeroom and loads on truck.
  • Unloads truck at job site.
  • Participates in the maintenance of the sign and paint shop and keeps all materials, supplies and equipment in good order.
  • Assists in the measurement and marking of street and curb areas to be painted.
  • Paints with brush and stripping machine.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or abilities required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
 
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. Some experience in painting or mechanical work is required, or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training. 
 
LANGUAGE SKILLS:  The employee must be able to read and interpret plans, specifications and legal documents relative to public works planning projects.  The employee must also be able to communicate both orally and in writing.
 
REASONING ABILITLY:  The employee must also be able to follow complex oral and written instructions.
 
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
 
 
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, supplies and equipment used in fabricating and erecting traffic signs and in painting markers.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the area.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability o maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Skill in the use of small hand tools.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADAWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach, climb, walk, stand, kneel, bend, stoop, throw, drive, taste, balance, crawl, push and smell. The employee may work outside in various weather conditions, in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment, grease or oils, solvents, chemicals, and in dusty or noisy conditions. May come in contact with heights, electrical energy, poor lighting, darkness, odors, and may be required to have legs, feet, or hands in water while on the job.
