CONSTRUCTION/MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I

Position Type: Full-Time                                                               Hours:  40 hrs/week

 

Job Summary:

This position performs basic semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair projects relating to buildings and facilities.  Operates equipment in connection with tasks assigned. This position requires customer contact.  Work involves carpentry skills, maintenance, repair, installation, renovation, relocation, and removal within the buildings for all City Facilities.  Work is performed under the supervision of the Maintenance Construction Lead Worker.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs construction and repair in buildings and other facilities.
  • Stocks new and existing parts and materials.
  • Maintains inventory including but not limited to city-issued electronics and reports inventory levels to supervisor.
  • Builds and/or repairs partitions, roofs, ceilings, doors, furniture, shelves and tables, old facilities, fencing, playground equipment.
  • Cleans filters and performs minor repair work on air conditioners and small engines.
  • Builds forms for concrete repair and pours and finishes concrete. 
  • Installs and/or repairs new plumbing fixtures, irrigation systems, window frames, door locks, window air conditioning units, and bleachers.
  • Maintains and operates power tools including but not limited to cut-off saw, chain saw, power drill, reciprocating saw, generators, and air-powered tools and trade tools and light construction equipment.
  • Performs basic electrical repairs.
  • Paints a variety of surfaces.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is required.
  • Some experience in public works or public utilities maintenance and/or the construction trades is desired.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements except for licensure/certification requirements.

 

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS          

  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • Must be First Aid and CPR/AED certified or get certified within six (6) months of hire.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND LICENSES

  • Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida CDL class “B” motor vehicles operator's license or higher with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements and an acceptable driving record is preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS      

  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.

REASONING ABILITY      

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations when immediate guidance from the supervisor may not be available.
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety manuals, operation guides, instructions, letters, memos, journals, maps, work order, blueprints, and professional journals.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Good physical condition is essential. Possess the physical ability to handle heavy building materials and climbing stairs.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment and materials used in the maintenance and repair of buildings and facilities preferred.
  • Ability to perform detailed tasks such as reading blueprints and drawing sketch plans for building repairs and changes.
  • Must have a basic understanding of electrical systems and their operation, and of various kinds of lumber.
  • Capability of adequate eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to perform basic and advanced mathematical calculations and shop math (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions, algebra, calculus, statistics)
  • Ability to work independently and in a diligent manner.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA:  This job requires walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, equipment operation and driving.  The employee will work outside in various weather conditions.  Working in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment may be required as well as working from heights, in dusty condition, with hands, feet, and/or legs in wastewater.
