Job Summary:
This position supervises the automatic equipment repair and maintenance activities. The employee does related work as required and is responsible for managing garage repair. Supervision is exercised over skilled mechanics whose work is assigned and frequently inspected.
Job Description:
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Diagnoses problems on all kinds of automatic and related equipment.
- Supervises and evaluates the work of automotive mechanics.
- Supervises the work of helpers who are involved in more routine maintenance tasks.
- Organizes work to be performed, including the setting of priorities.
- Receives, assigns, supervises, instructs, sublets, and directs preventive and general maintenance and repairs on light and heavy automotive equipment.
- Oversees preventive maintenance activities.
- Orders necessary parts and supplies and supervises stock room activity.
- Maintains records and prepares reports.
- Performs welding, as necessary.
- Coordinates the movement of vehicles, between departments, shop and vendors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is required.
- Considerable experience at the level of Automotive Mechanic is required.
- Some experience in a supervisory capacity at a large garage or service center is highly preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements except for licensure/certification requirements.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possess and maintain a valid CDL class “A” motor vehicles operator's license issued by the State of Florida with an acceptable driving record is required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and maintain good personal relationship with other employees and the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees and the general public.
REASONING ABILITY
- Ability to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out complex instructions furnished in written and oral form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of journeyman automotive mechanics.
- Comprehensive knowledge of automotive mechanics and repairs methods.
- Knowledge of automotive cautions of the trade.
- Ability to diagnose defects and failures of specialized tools and equipment of the trade.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: The employee may work inside an office environment, or outside in various weather conditions, with radiant energy, grease or oils, solvents, or chemicals. Employees may have to work in dusty conditions, poor lighting, noisy conditions, and darkness or on uneven surfaces. Some job tasks may require employee to bend, stoop, drive, kneel, operate equipment, crawl, push or life or carry 45 pounds or less.
