SIGN MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I

 

Department: 132/Public Works Streets                                                                 Exempt: No

Reports To: Superintendent                                                                                   Pay Grade/Wage: 110

Position Type: Full-Time                                                                                      Hours: 40 hrs/week

 

Job Summary:

This position performs skilled work in fabrication and erection of traffic signs, and in painting of lines and markings for the control and regulations of traffic. Work is performed under general supervision of Superintendent.

Job Description:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Erects regulatory, warning and guiding traffic signs and sign posts.

  • Repair damaged signs and straightens bent posts.

  • Removes and refurbishes non-legible signs and markings.

  • Assists in the painting of lane lines and special zone markings.

  • Paints parking meter posts.

  • Applies cat-eye lane and line reflectors.

  • Applies prefabricated lettering to plastic facing.

  • Checks out materials from storeroom and loads on truck.

  • Unloads truck at job site.

  • Participates in the maintenance of the sign and paint shop and keeps all materials, supplies and equipment in good order.

  • Assists in the measurement and marking of street and curb areas to be painted.

  • Paints with brush and stripping machine.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is required.

  • Some experience in painting or mechanical work is required.

  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess and maintain a valid CDL class “B” motor vehicles operator's license or higher issued by the State of Florida with an acceptable driving record is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to read and write neatly.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.

  • Ability to develop and maintain good personal relationship with other employees and the public.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out complex instructions furnished in written and oral form.

  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and legal documents relative to public works planning projects

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of methods, materials, supplies and equipment used in fabricating and erecting traffic signs and in painting markers.

  • Knowledge of the geography of the area.

  • Skill in the use various hand and power tools related to the job.

  • Ability to work independently and in a diligent manner.

  • Good physical condition is essential.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach, climb, walk, stand, kneel, bend, stoop, throw, drive, taste, balance, crawl, push and smell. The employee may work outside in various weather conditions, in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment, grease or oils, solvents, chemicals, and in dusty or noisy conditions. May come in contact with heights, electrical energy, poor lighting, darkness, odors, and may be required to have legs, feet, or hands in water while on the job.
