Utilities Plant Technician III
Pay Grade: U106 Dept: Water Production / Wastewater Treatment
Exempt: No Reports to: Water / Wastewater Superintendent
Hours: 40 per week Date: NOVEMBER, 2024
SUMMARY: Performs semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance, repair and assists in the operation of a water treatment plant. Employee will be required to handle hazardous chemicals and may be in charge of the ground maintenance, janitorial, and compound security. The employee reports to Water / Wastewater Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain irrigation systems.
- Maintains daily logs and records.
- Checks all equipment.
- Performs preventive maintenance.
- Performs minor laboratory work.
- May operate equipment on occasion, such as tractor, trucks, pumps, and machinery.
- Answers telephone calls and dispatches emergency crew.
- Monitors and operates computers for alarms and proper operation of wells, water, and wastewater plants.
- Able to perform shift work as assigned.
- Possesses a valid Florida Drivers License.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and extensive knowledge in the maintenance and construction of the water plants. This position requires 3 years as a Utility Plant Technician II and must have a certificate of completion for the Class C Water / Wastewater Plant Operator’s course work book two approved by FDEP. The individual must be in good physical condition and have ability to accept and understand directions. Must be CPR / AED qualified
REASONING ABILITY: The applicant must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram forms. The applicant must also be able to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations when immediate guidance from the supervisor may not be available.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of simple hand and power tools.
- Ability to learn streets and facility locations within the service area.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by the work.
- Ability to fill out reports and work orders with good penmanship.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the public.
- Ability to read and write.
- Ability to work independently in a diligent manner.
REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:
- Certificate of Completion for Class C Water / Wastewater Plant Operator’s course work book two
- CPR / AED Certification
DESIRABLE LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
- Class B Florida Commercial Drivers License with Air Brake endorsement
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: This job requires walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, equipment operation and driving. The employee will work outside in various weather conditions. Working in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment may be required as well as working from heights, in dusty condition, with hands, feet, and/or legs in wastewater and may handle chemicals.
