FIRE INSPECTOR

 

Department: 122/Fire                                         Exempt: No

Reports To: Deputy Fire Chief                            Pay Grade/Wage: F106

Position Type: Full-Time                                     Hours: 40 hrs/week

 

Job Summary:

This is a responsible support position assigned to the Divi­sion of Fire Prevention involving skilled and technical field inspections and code enforcement activities. The em­ployee is responsible to and works under the general supervision and direction of the Fire Prevention Division and or the Deputy Fire Chief.

 

Job Description:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs under minimal supervision inspections and re-inspections.
  • Plans and reviews code compliance, public education and relations.
  • Reviews and approves Occupational Licenses for the Fire Department.
  • Conduct inspections of fire protection systems and devices in buildings and structures within in the municipality such as, but not limited to sprinklers, portable fire extinguishers, heat and smoke detectors, and other private fire protection devices when requested to assist the CBO and Building Department.
  • Orders corrections and remedies of hazardous conditions where they exist and follows through until disposition is satisfactory.
  • Investigates and reports on complaints received from any concerned person, group, or agency on matters concerning hazardous conditions or practices.
  • Prepares documents and submits electronic, oral and written reports, as required, to include, but not limited to: daily routine sheets, inspections and re-inspections reports, investigative reports.
  • Responsible and accountable for all duties and functions assigned, and works under the general supervision and directions of the Division of Fire Prevention and the Deputy Fire Chief.
  • Provides written or electronic documentation of all duties performed and maintains an up to date paper and electronic filing system.
  • Reports violations to the Division of Fire Prevention, Building Department and the Code Enforcement Department as needed.
  • Reads plans to assure that proper fire safety requirements are being incorporated into site plans, renovations and new construction of buildings if requested by the CBO.
  • Assists the Building Department in attaining technical information in the area of Fire Prevention. Performs related duties as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Fire Prevention Division or Deputy Fire Chief.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is required.
  • Possession of a current Florida Fire Safety Inspector's Certification and License with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in the field of Fire Service is required.
  • State of Florida Firefighters Minimum Standards Certification and/or Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic Certification is helpful but not required.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid Florida driver's license is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to speak and deal directly with the public in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good personal relationship with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relations with City departments and other agencies.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to interpret fire safety laws, rules and regulations, and the fire prevention code.
  • Ability to work independently, efficiently, and effectively with the public on routine, stressful or complex issues.
  • Ability to organize, prepare and submit accurate, clear, and concise reports in a timely fashion.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of fire safety and of inspection techniques.
  • Considerable working knowledge of State Standard Codes, NFPA Standards, National Fire Codes, Life Safety Code, and local fire codes, laws and ordinances.
  • Extensive knowledge of fire hazards found in various types of occupancies; of characteristics and behavior of smoke and fire and their effects on human life; of storage and handling of combustible, flammable and explosive materials; of modern practices to guard against the occurrence of fire or minimize losses and the most current means of protection.
  • Ability to use manual, mechanical and electronic tools and equipment as required.
  • Secure and maintain confidential or sensitive information.
  • Work independently and undertake assigned tasks or projects
  • Efficiently and effectively work with the public on routine, stressful or complex issues.
  • Perform under stress and accomplish assignments within a short or immediate deadline when required.
  • Enforce fire and life safety codes firmly, tactfully, impartially, and consistently; understand and carry out instructions or directives with minimum of supervision; adhere to prescribed routines and practices, and provide logical and constructive suggestions or recommendations of same.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: Employee may work inside an office environment, or outside in various weather conditions, from heights, on uneven surfaces, with radiant energy, in dusty conditions, and may handle solvents and chemicals. This position requires walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, driving, equipment operation, depth perception, and lifting 45 pounds or more.
