Utilities / Journeyman Electrician I

Pay Grade: U111                                                        Dept: Utilities Collections / Maintenance

Exempt: No                                                                 Reports to: Instrumental Control and Electrical Supervisor

Summary: This position performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled manual tasks at the journeyman level in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment, mechanical equipment, instrumentation and control equipment. Work is performed under general direction. Duties may involve the use of trades tools and the operation of light construction equipment as a part of the assignment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Instrumental Control and Electrical Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under supervision of a master electrician, performs such duties as maintenance and repair of equipment at water / wastewater plants, lift stations, generators, and storm pump stations.
  • Initiates and performs preventative maintenance programs.
  • Inspects complex electrical and control equipment for proper operation.
  • Repairs all electrical equipment and electronic components including lamp replacement.
  • Performs routine inspections on operating equipment.
  • Orders parts and materials as needed.
  • Coordinates with other trades as needed
  • Install electrical wiring, devices, and systems as assigned.
  • On call rotation is required for this position.
  • Responds to after hours emergencies as needed.
  • Possesses a valid Florida Driver's License.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or abilities required. EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE: Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and considerable experience in maintenance of medium voltage electrical systems, and equipment including experience in the repair and installation of: instrumentation including primary sensing devices, indicators, recorders, automated controls, radio telemetry equipment, small transformers, motor controls, 480 volt equipment, transfer switches, generators, control panels, general power and lighting. The applicant should have a considerable knowledge of the most current national electric codes (NEC). The employee must be a licensed journeyman with Volusia County FL. And possess a valid Florida driver’s license. The individual must be in good physical condition and have ability to accept and understand directions. Within one year must be CPR / AED qualified and after probation being available for on-call work rotation is required.

REASONING ABILITY: The applicant must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram forms. The applicant must also be able to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations when immediate guidance from the supervisor may not be available.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair, of all sizes of electrical equipment such as but not limited to, controls, telemetry, recorders, transformers, switches, and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, tools, terminology, and safety standards of the electrical and mechanical trades.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Possess the physical ability and strength to handle heavy electrical materials and climbing stairs.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to read safety manuals, instructions, memos, blueprints, schematics, and work orders.
  • Ability to sketch and or draw: electrical installations and schematics / wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to compose a list of materials required to complete a job or project.
  • Ability to estimate the cost of materials and labor units required for a job or project.
  • Ability to perform work in a consistently safe manner.
  • Capability of standard eye hand coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and shop math (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions and algebraic formulas).

REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:

  • Class E Driver License
  • Licensed Journeyman with Volusia County

DESIRABLE LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:

  • Class B Commercial Driver License with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: This job requires walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, equipment operation and driving. The employee will work outside in various weather conditions. Working in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment may be required as well as working from heights, in dusty condition, with hands, feet, and/or legs in wastewater and may handle chemicals.

Vision: 20/20 or Corrected to 20/100

Hearing: Normal to very high noise levels
