ARBORIST TECHNICIAN I

 

Rate of Pay: $17.37 Hourly                                               Dept: Public Works -  Tree Division

Exempt: No                                                                         Reports to: Foreman

Hours: 40 per week                                                             Date: 2021

 

SUMMARY: This is a skilled position within the city’s tree division. Work involves personal participation in a variety of tasks including but not limited to planting, pruning, felling, and removal of city trees. An Arborist is responsible for the proper operation and care of assigned equipment and tools. Assignments are received verbally or in the form of work orders, and the work is inspected during progress and reviewed upon completion.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates in the planting, pruning, felling, and removal of trees.

  • Uses power chainsaws, handsaws, pole pruners, and other tools to remove dead, broken, and undesired branches and trees.

  • Uses ropes, blocks, pulleys, and other rigging equipment to safely remove and lower limbs and heavy sections of wood.

  • Washes vehicles and other assigned equipment.

  • Performs daily inspections and maintenance of equipment.

  • Relays time and production information to the Foreman.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or abilities required. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High school graduation or GED required. An Arborist must have considerable experience in the trimming and removal of trees or the ability to learn the skills needed to safely trim and remove trees. Maintenance of traffic (M.O.T) certification and Electrical Hazard Awareness (EHAP) certifications must be possessed and maintained by the Arborist. A state of Florida CDL class B with Air Breaks must also be possessed and maintained. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Employee must also be able to communicate both orally and in writing.

 

REASONING ABILITY: An Arborist must be able to recognize recognizable defects and possible hazards within the tree being worked. He/she must also be able to adjust the work plan to maintain safety as situations arise on the jobsite.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have knowledge of and ability to apply safe rigging practices and techniques.

  • Must be proficient in the tying of common knots used in the industry.

  • Must know the safe operating procedures and maintenance requirements of chainsaws and other equipment used by tree workers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: Employee works outside in various weather conditions, from heights, on uneven surfaces, with radiant energy, in dusty conditions, and may handle solvents and chemicals. This position requires walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, driving, finger dexterity, depth perception, and lifting up to 75 lbs.
